Toyota South Africa has recalled nothing less than 730,000 cars over faulty airbags dating back to over 15 years.

According to reports, the recall affected airbags built by Takata that had been found to have a potential for moisture intrusion, which could cause them to burst.

“In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, striking and possibly injuring the occupants in the event of an accident,” said a statement by the Japanese company

The faulty airbags, made by Japanese company Takata, have caused many automakers to recall vehicles in South Africa.
