By 2050, all the cars that circulate around the Balearic Islands will be electric. This is the ambitious goal that the Government has set and the measures to achieve it have not been long in coming.

The Balearic administration openly declares war on fossil fuels by prohibiting the sale of diesel cars in 2025, as well as those powered by gasoline by 2035.

For the moment, this radical measure is reflected in the draft of the draft of the ” Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition ” that follows the route of the Paris Agreements and has just been presented by the executive. The proposal is a pioneer in Spain, but not in other regions of the world, such as Scotland or California .

As reported by El Diario de Mallorca , according to the Govern data, 35% of the CO2 emissions of the archipelago are caused by vehicles traveling on its roads: to eliminate vehicles powered by traditional fuels, pollution would be reduced in 90% in urban centers.

The first thing that has advanced from the Balearic administration is that this measure, to finally see the light, will not affect the vehicles marketed before these deadlines, which may continue to circulate until the end of its useful life by the highways of the archipelago. And we say vehicles because the measure does not discriminate and affects cars, motorcycles, vans and trucks alike.

The progressive electrification of the Balearic automobile fleet will begin with rental companies , which must gradually incorporate electric cars into their fleets from 2020. The percentage that year will have to be 2% to finish at 100% by 2035.

Meanwhile, as of 2025, diesel vehicles will be banned from sale and, ten years later, those from gasoline.
