The Peugeot flagship had an important renewal and, although yesterday we saw the first filtered images of the new Peugeot 508 , today we have more photographs and all the official information of this sedan that will be presented officially at the Geneva Motor Show , inside a few days The French brand calls it a revolution, but … what’s special about it?
In addition to an interesting coupe style roof design , a new generation i-Cockpit interior , new engines or the promise of great road performance, this Peugeot 508 also makes a significant leap in terms of quality of materials and technological equipment and of security. Let’s see it in detail.
According to Peugeot, the tragic situation in Europe of the D-segment general saloons- where only the premium ones have a gap-is what has pushed them to create a 508 with a very specific silhouette and a high-end appearance, which mixes the features of a life-long sedan with certain lines that make it look like a five-door coupe .
This personal design, with attractive strokes, sports a chrome grille, full LED headlights inspired by the 2014 Exalt prototype , stylized vertical LED daytime running lights – which visually connect the headlight with the lower air intakes, 16-year rims 19 inches and eight designs, or 508 logo on the front of the hood, in homage to the Peugeot 504 and 504 Coupé. In addition, it has a Cx of 0.24.
With 4.75 meters in length (2.79 of battle), the Peugeot 508 is 8 centimeters shorter than its predecessor and noticeably smaller than an Opel Insignia (4.9 meters), a Renault Talisman (4.84 meters) or a Kia Optima (4.86 meters), among others.
It is 1.84 meters wide and its height is 1.4 meters and in the side view the narrowness of the glazed surface with respect to the sheet or the absence of window frames is striking. On the rear stands out the bright black horizontal band, wedged between the three-dimensional LED pilots , or the two chromed exhaust exits (at least in the GT finish).
Interior i-Cockpit, almost prototype
At first glance the interior of the new Peugeot 508 could make us think that we are in the cockpit of a prototype, and that it looks quite futuristic , starting with the shapes of the steering wheel or the design of the change selector, and ending with the keypads of the central console or the digital instrument panel, in a higher than normal position as is usual in the i-Cockpit interiors (this is already a third generation).
The keys to this philosophy of interiors are a small-sized steering wheel , in this case flattened on the top and bottom of the GT version, the 12.3-inch digital dashboard in an elevated position – fully customizable to the driver’s taste – and a capacitive touch screen of 8 or 10 inches wide (depending on the finish) integrated in the center console, next to “piano” buttons with direct access to radio, climate control, navigator, telephone, etc …
Among the materials that can be found inside this 508 are Nappa leather , alcantara , satin chrome moldings or black lacquer, and natural wood , which in certain finishes can be gray oak. The “wrap-around” front seats can have a massage function (five different programs) and the driver’s seat has AGR certification as an option, as well as up to eight electrical settings and two memories .
The trunk offers a load volume of 487 liters (up to 1,537 liters), and the interior adds up to 32 liters of capacity between its storage compartments, as well as 4 USB sockets for recharging devices, an auxiliary audio input or two power sockets 12V -one of them in the trunk-. The audio equipment is in charge of the French brand Focal and a panoramic glass roof is available . According to Peugeot, the interior space is comparable to that of an Audi A5 Sportback .
In addition, the interior offers two environments (Boost and Relax) through i-Cockpit Amplify, which alter the intensity of the interior lighting, the color of the screens and the ambient music, or activate the massage function of the seats. In addition, there are four driving modes ( ECO , Sport , Comfort and Normal ) that vary the dynamics of the car – some versions can be equipped with adaptive suspension.
Chassis to the height and range of engines
The new Peugeot 508, manufactured in Mulhouse (France), is based on the EMP2 platform of the group, which among other things has allowed to reduce its weight in 70 kilograms with respect to the previous generation. In addition, it adopts a multi-link rear axle , a new engine support and, depending on the version, variable dampers ( Active Suspension Control ) as standard on the GT finish.
Peugeot claims that the electric boot lid and hands-free function has been manufactured in thermoplastic, while other components such as the bonnet or the front wings are made of aluminum . In addition, the brand ensures that they have worked with some of the best suppliers to obtain top-level components. The glasses of the vehicle, for example, are 1 millimeter thicker than the standard of the segment.
The PureTech gasoline and BlueHDi diesel engines of the Peugeot 508 offer between 130 and 225 HP, and are already Euro 6c. Peugeot promises a plug-in hybrid version of gasoline for autumn 2019. The six engines available in launch are the following:
- PureTech 180 S & S EAT8
PureTech 225 S & S EAT8 (Only GT)
BlueHDi 130 S & S 6V
- BlueHDi 130 S & S EAT8
- BlueHDi 160 S & S EAT8
- BlueHDi 180 S & S EAT8
Technology and, above all, a lot of security
The arsenal of assistance and security systems of the new 508 includes a night vision function using an infrared camera , capable of detecting living beings on the road – at night or with poor visibility, up to 250 meters in front of the vehicle – and until now reserved for higher segment models. The camera image appears in the middle of the instrument panel, in front of the driver.
To this are added from adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function in the automatic versions, to the lane maintenance assistant, the automatic emergency brake (up to 140 km / h), active warning of involuntary lane change, automatic lights, warning driver’s attention, signal recognition , 360-degree camera, auto-parking assistant or blind spot assistant, for example.
With regard to connectivity , the 508 offers Mirror Screen function through MirrorLink, Android AUto and Apple Car Play, wireless recharge by induction for mobile phones and, through the Peugeot Connect package, also 3D navigator with TomTom Traffic, emergency call or services connected Peugeot Connect.
