Volvo is determined to accelerate its transition to electrified models and has introduced the second-generation Volvo V60 with two plug-in hybrid powertrains : the new Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid gasoline engine, which develops a combined power of 340 hp, or the T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid gasoline, which develops 390 hp.
The production of the new station wagon will begin this spring in Torslandia, Sweden, and the first units will arrive in July of this year. Prices? They will start at 40,100 euros in Germany.
Wind sales aft
In 2010, the first generation Volvo V60 debuted and two years later its first hybrid plug-in variant was introduced. In the period from 2011 to 2017, a total of 353,184 units have been sold globally; alone during 2017 35,503 units were sold .
It seems that since Ford sold the Swedish firm to Geely in 2010 the fate of Volvo has only increased, it reached last year a historical record of sales that amounted to 1,740 million dollars and 571,577 vehicles sold. It aspires to reach 800,000 global units in 2020 and this second generation of the V60 will give a good boost to that goal.
Of medium size (4.76 meters in length) and five doors, the V60 2018 is presented as versatile, familiar and very technological. Share the Volvo platform SPA (scalable product architecture) with the new XC60 and the S90 and V90 .
In addition, for the first time in the segment, customers can access the new V60 through the Care by Volvo subscription service , which allows access to the vehicle through a subscription of monthly flat rate of 849 euros against the ownership model. A modality that is available, for the time being, in Germany, Spain, the United States, Italy, Norway, Poland, the United Kingdom and Sweden.
Volvo has placed a strong bet on this business model, and according to the firm’s CEO, Hakan Samuelsson, subscriptions are expected to represent 25% of Volvo’s sales in five years. Otherwise, he says, they will have to rethink this form of ‘property’.
What we find ourselves inside: sobriety and elegance
We found in the new V60 a rather austere but very elegant interior, with a 9-inch touch screen and vertical format, from which the air conditioning, the navigator or the telephone are handled. The Sensus infotainment system from Volvo Cars is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, and keeps drivers connected at all times.
As for driving and safety aids, we can expect it to shine again in the Euro NCAP tests as the S90 and the V90 did a year ago . We found the City Safety technology with automatic brake, which uses automatic detection and braking systems to help the driver avoid possible collisions. As a novelty, now City Safety also activates automatic braking to mitigate the effect of head-on collisions.
It also includes the Pilot Assist system , which helps the driver by taking over the steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 km / h, has been optimized with improved cornering performance.
The V60 also has attenuation of roadway exits , attenuation of collisions with vehicles of the opposite lane and other systems of assistance to the direction. The optional crossover alert with automatic brake further increases safety for people inside and outside the vehicle.
Expectations placed on hybridization
Currently, plug-in hybrids represent approximately 15% of Volvo’s sales in the models that offer the powertrain. These include the XC60 and XC90 crossovers and the V90 truck.
As we have already anticipated, the V60 is available with two plug-in engine options in Europe: the T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid gasoline (340 hp), or the T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid gasoline (390 hp), which will be the that is commercialized in the US market. Both, with all- wheel drive .
It is the first time that Volvo offers two plug-in hybrid options in a car backed by its scalable product architecture. Last year, he promised to offer some kind of electrification in every completely new model from 2019.
The option of normal gasoline allows to choose between T5 or T6 engines, and drivers who prefer diesel can opt for D3 (150 HP) or D4 (190 HP) engines . Samuelsson, for its part, expects plug-in hybrid variants to represent up to 25% of sales of the V60.
