Mercedes Sprinter (2018)

The Mercedes eSprinter, the large electric van to the star, will offer 2 battery capacities depending on the payload desired.

The Mercedes eSprinter comes to support the previously launched eVito . Larger, the eSprinter can ship 10.5 m3. It is nearly 6m long and has a wheelbase of almost 4m. Side payload, there are two configurations. The first allows to board about 900 kg.

In this configuration, the battery has a capacity of 55 kWh. This allows the Mercedes eSprinter to travel “about 150 km, even in adverse conditions such as low ambient temperature or full load,” says Mercedes. The builder here targets a clientele of urban delivery menwho “rarely load their vehicle to the payload” .

For those who want more payload, there is a second configuration. It allows to ship 140 kg more or about 1040 kg of CU. Not to exceed 3.5 tons on the loaded vehicle, Mercedes has sacrificed some battery. 14 kWh exactly. The battery is then 41 kWh and the autonomy drops to “about 115 km” .

The Mercedes eSprinter can be recharged on a wallbox (7.2 kW – 32 A). It takes 8h for the 55 kWh version and 6 for the 41 kWh version. But, the van can also be connected to a fast DC terminal (DC) and recover 80% of its battery in 45 minutes.

Autonomy or payload

On the performance side, the eSprinter has a 112 hp (84 kW) engine with a maximum torque of 300 Nm. The engine is calibrated to drive at an ideal speed of 80 km / h. But the Mercedes eSprinter can reach 120 k / h in return for a range that drastically drops.

The first deliveries are expected this fall. The next step in the electrification of Mercedes utilities will go through an eCitan. He will then compete directly with his twin brother, the Renault Kangoo ZE.

Speaking of competition, the new Mercedes eSprinter will rub the Renault Master ZE Available in 3 configurations (length / height) the Master ZE is available also with 10.8 m3 of volume. Its small battery of 33 kWh allows it to go to 1 ton of payload but still display 145 km at 20 ° C, 50 km / h average and fully charged. Still, the latter does not load faster than 4 hours for 80% of autonomy.

The price is currently unknown. But, Mercedes promises the operational costs will be at the same level as the comparable vehicle with diesel engine. This should exceed 45 000 € HT. The electric utility market is full of novelties. 2019 should see (finally) the growth of this market for the moment rather confidential.
