Prefigured by a “concept” at the last Tokyo Motor Show, the new Toyota Crown has just been launched in Japan. For its 15th generation since 1955, the large saloon highlights connectivity and driving aids.

An iconic model in Japan , one of the few countries in which it is available, the Toyota Crown remains a large, state-of-the-art sedan. For some generations, however, she has sought to invigorate its appearance, with here a face always very expressive and dominated by a huge grille that now stretches in its lower part. The classic profile with 3 side windows without frills is tempered by a more elusive rear integrating the 3rd volume of the trunk.

Technically, this Crown is based on a TNGA architecture. Certainly, but not quite the same TNGA as the Camry, Avalon or Auris. It remains indeed a sedan propulsion, phew! And there is new under the hood, with two hybrid versions, plus a turbo engine. We find here the 2.0 Turbo 180 kW / 245 hp / 350 Nm, associated with an 8-speed automatic transmission, only in propulsion.

Above, the Crown offers not one but two hybrid versions. The classic 4-cylinder 2.5 135 kW / 184 hp is in the game, with its electric motor of 105 kW / 143 hp, for a total announced at 166 kW / 226 hp. Or the same set, arranged longitudinally, as in the hybrid Camry that will arrive soon in Europe. And at the top of the range, the Crown receives a V6 3.5 220 kW / 299 hp, also hybridized. With the electric motor of 132 kW / 180 hp, the group announces 264 kW / 359 hp. You will no doubt recognize it, it is about the mechanics of the Lexus LS500h … Only the hybrid 2.5 is proposed with the integral transmission.

With this new Crown, and the new Auris Corolla Sport launched simultaneously in Japan, Toyota is launching its new package of connected services . The Crown is connected to the smartphone of its driver / owner, as well as the Toyota call center or the emergency services. For standard vehicle status, maintenance assistance, concierge or emergency services. The service can also be combined with a Toyota insurance, the rates of which will depend on the driving of the car. Safer driving = cheaper insurance … A service also makes it possible to consult the state of the roads after the natural disasters .

In addition to this connectivity, the Crown, which arrives less than 6 years after the 14th generation, is full of driving aids: adaptive cruise control, centering in the taxiway, recognition of pedestrians day and night, cyclists, daytime only, adaptive anti-glare lighting, parking assist braking when fixed or moving obstacles are too close
