A reference chassis, that of the new Peugeot 508 GT? To find out, we have called the Alfa Romeo Giulia – standard meter – for a match of family with which the pleasure of driving counts more than centimeters in the trunk.

Comparative test: the Peugeot 508 GT challenges the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 T
To gauge family sedans, the double centimeter is often out to see who has the largest chest, the best elbow width or good roof guard. For this match Peugeot 508 vs. Alfa Romeo Giulia , a change of method: this time, it’s the pleasure of driving that will guide us between the French, more keen than ever, and the Italian who has made a reference chassis since his return in 2016.

In 2018, the Peugeot 508 adopts a hatchback. Giulia remains classic.
Since we talk about pleasure, we left the diesels in the garage to enjoy the best on the Sochaux: 508 GT PureTech 225 hp . On the other side of the Alps, the Giulia range shows much more testosterone with the diabolical Quadrifoglio 510 hp and muscular Veloce 280 hp. To go down to the French level, the Giulia 2.0 Turbo 200 hp is the ideal configuration and the prices of both models are close.

In order to highlight and tend towards the premium universe that they claim, the Peugeot 508 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia are dressed with high finishes. The 508 GT receives princely equipment for comfort and technology in exchange for a nice price. Price 508 GT PureTech 225: 46 000 €.

The Giulia Lusso does not miss the equipment expected at this level but, as we will see, its standard equipment is less supplied. Giulia 2.0 Turbo price: € 47,390. Note that both models are equipped as standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission, original ZF for the Alfa and Aisin for the 508.

Dimensions Peugeot 508 and Alfa Giulia
No double decimeter but a few words on the size of our two families. Shorter (-8 cm) and lower (-6 cm) than the model it replaces the new 508 adopts a new 5-door coupe profile. Its length is now 4.75 m, which is more generous than the Giulia (4.64 m) which remains one of the most compact family in the segment with the BMW 3 Series . Everyone is on the side of design: low-profile and huge LED fangs at the front for the Peugeot, tricorps silhouette and famous triangle grille for the Alfa Romeo.

Mechanically, the main difference between our two families is their architecture. The 508 shares its platform with other models of the PSA group and takes a chassis traction (front wheels). The Giulia receives a dedicated chassis (shared since with the Stelvio ) which remains faithful to the Alfa Romeo DNA with a propulsion architecture (rear-wheel drive).
