Discover essential FRSC motorcycle safety guidelines to ride safe on Nigerian roads. From mandatory helmets and one-passenger rules to speed limits, night riding bans, and zero alcohol tolerance, these official tips prevent accidents and fines. Perfect for okada riders, delivery pros, and weekend cruisers. Follow FRSC advice for hassle-free journeys
1. Wear Helmet & Protective Gear
Every rider and passenger MUST wear a standard helmet (ISI or DOT mark). Add jacket, gloves, knee pads, and ankle boots. No slippers, no half-helmet. Fine: ₦10,000.
2. One Passenger Only
Maximum one adult passenger. No child in front. Both must wear helmets. Overloading = instant impound.
3. No Night Journey on Highways
Avoid riding 8pm–5am on federal roads. Robbers target okadas. If you must, join a convoy and keep headlights on low beam.
4. Speed Limit
50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on express. Speeding is the #1 killer. We mount radar at Otedola, Sagamu, and Lokoja.
5. Bike Documents
Always carry:
Valid rider’s licence (Class A)
Bike insurance (third-party minimum)
Roadworthiness certificate
Hackney permit (for commercial)
6. No Phone, No Earpiece
Hands-free is still illegal. One second on WhatsApp = 14 metres blind at 50 km/h.
7. Lights & Reflectors
Headlight, taillight, and indicators working 24/7. Stick reflective tape on helmet and bike sides. No light at night = ₦5,000 fine.
8. No Alcohol or Drugs
Zero tolerance. Breathalyzer at every festive patrol point. One bottle and you lose your bike for 3 months.
9. Lane Discipline
Stay in the left lane. No weaving between trailers. Use indicators 5 seconds before turning.
10. Rain Rules
Reduce speed by half. Avoid painted lines and metal plates. Pull over if visibility drops below 50 m.
