Spark plugs create the electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. Most manufacturers recommend inspecting spark plugs every 20,000–30,000 km and replacing them every 40,000–80,000 km, depending on the type of plug and driving habits. The most common types of spark plugs found in Nigerian vehicles are copper, platinum, and iridium. Copper plugs are the cheapest and offer good performance but wear out fastest, typically lasting 30,000–50,000 km. Platinum and iridium plugs are more expensive upfront but last significantly longer often 60,000–100,000 km or more because their harder materials resist erosion better.
Iridium plugs have the smallest and most durable center electrode, providing a stronger, more consistent spark and better fuel efficiency. For most Nigerian drivers, platinum or iridium plugs offer the best balance of performance and longevity.To check your spark plugs, first make sure the engine is completely cool. Remove the ignition coils or plug wires carefully (use the boot, never pull the wire itself). Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to loosen and remove each plug. Examine the electrode and insulator.
A healthy spark plug should have a light tan or greyish colour. Black, sooty deposits usually indicate a rich fuel mixture, while white or blistered insulators suggest overheating or a lean mixture.
