The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reassured Nigerians that the country’s transition to Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered transportation will be anchored on the highest standards of road safety.
Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, gave the assurance while speaking at the 3rd Nigeria Auto Industry Summit (NAISU) organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in Lagos.
The summit, themed “Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Future: The EV and CNG Journey Under the Bola Tinubu Administration”, brought together regulators, manufacturers, investors and transport stakeholders to chart strategies for clean mobility.
Mohammed said while alternative fuel vehicles present enormous opportunities for Nigeria, the adoption must be supported by robust safety regulations, effective enforcement and sustained collaboration.
He disclosed that FRSC has already begun positioning itself to support the transition by strengthening safety regulations, engaging critical stakeholders and developing operational frameworks tailored specifically to EVs and CNG vehicles.
According to him, as EVs and CNG-powered vehicles become more prevalent on Nigerian roads, regulatory institutions must adapt through specialised training, updated operational guidelines and stronger enforcement mechanisms.
A major highlight of his presentation was the unveiling of a comprehensive safety framework for nationwide deployment of EVs and CNG vehicles. The framework covers vehicle certification, roadworthiness standards, emergency response procedures, accident prevention, technician capacity building and public enlightenment.
He stressed that the benefits of cleaner mobility should go beyond reducing carbon emissions to include improved road safety, enhanced vehicle standards and increased public confidence in emerging transport technologies.
Mohammed added that achieving a safe and sustainable transition requires collective commitment from road users, transport operators, vehicle manufacturers, conversion centres and regulators.
He reaffirmed the Corps’ readiness to collaborate with agencies such as NADDC, SON, the Federal Fire Service, and industry players to ensure Nigeria’s shift to cleaner transportation delivers lasting safety, environmental and economic benefits for all Nigerians.
