One of the most critical items to verify is the timing belt, especially on older Japanese models that still dominate the used market. A timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft in precise sync so the valves open and close at the right moments. When it snaps on an interference engine, the pistons can collide with the valves and cause expensive internal damage.
